About this Program

Universal AI is a self-paced program that helps you move from beginner to confident, capable authority on AI – with no technical or coding background required. Developed by more than 30 MIT faculty and domain experts, you will learn the fundamentals of how AI works, then apply it to real-world challenges across industries. With a flexible, modular format and stackable credentials, you can learn at your own pace while gaining skills that remain relevant as AI evolves.

The foundational courses teach conceptual depth, comprehension, and applications of AI through real-world case studies and hands-on applications instead of mathematical concepts. The program also features optional courses that explore applications of AI across industry verticals including healthcare, sustainability, entrepreneurship, transportation, and more. The courses build on the core curriculum, but can also be taken on their own, so you can focus on the most relevant aspects of AI to your career or interests.

Throughout the program, you will:

-Build durable AI fluency through rigorous, accessible, and industry-relevant content from MIT faculty and experts

-Learn at your own pace with support from a dedicated AI assistant, AskTIM

-Earn stackable MIT Open Learning credentials to demonstrate your skills and expertise in AI

You have one year from the date purchase to complete courses, earn certificates, and use AskTIM, after which you'll retain access to content but won't receive content updates or new releases.

Eric Grimson

Professor of Medical Engineering and Computer Science

W. Eric L. Grimson is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Bernard M. Gordon Professor of Medical Engineering. He was Chancellor of MIT from 2011 to 2014. A member of the MIT faculty since 1984, Professor Grimson previously served as head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as its associate department head, and as its education officer. Professor Grimson is internationally recognized for his research in computer vision, especially in applications in medical image analysis. He and his students have developed techniques for activity and behavior recognition, object and person recognition, image database indexing, image guided surgery, site modeling, and many other areas of computer vision. Professor Grimson has been actively engaged with students throughout his career. For 25 years he lectured subject 6.001 Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, and is now engaged in teaching 6.00 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming and 6.01 Introduction to EECS. He has also taught undergraduate subjects in computer architecture, software engineering, and signal processing. In all, Professor Grimson has taught more than 10,000 MIT undergraduates and served as the thesis supervisor to almost 50 MIT PhDs. Professor Grimson is a native of Saskatchewan, Canada. He received the BSc (Hons) degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Regina in 1975 and his PhD in mathematics in 1980 from MIT. He is a recipient of the Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching in the School of Engineering at MIT. He is a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

FAQs

Anyone, including non-technical professionals, who is seeing the impact of AI on their careers and industry will benefit from taking this program in order to gain a foundational understanding of how AI works and how it can be applied.

No, you do not need any prior experience with programming or AI. The program is designed to be broadly approachable to a wide range of backgrounds, including those who are completely new to AI, data analysis, and/or coding. You will learn the basics of Python programming in the first Universal AI course.

In general, the program is best suited for working professionals with at least a U.S. high school-level education, but we encourage anyone interested in AI to explore the program.

This program will provide you with an understanding of core AI concepts, use cases, and real-world applications you can immediately apply to your work. You will leave the program with the ability to analyze output from AI tools, make better decisions at work, and clearly and confidently explain AI and its impacts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Additionally this program will equip you with the ability to think critically about AI and identify risks and ethical implications of AI deployment in your organization and beyond.

The Universal AI program is fully online and self-paced, so you can learn on your own schedule. On average, we expect the full program to take 15-20 weeks to complete if you are spending 7-10 hours on it per week.

As part of the program, you also have access to AskTIM, an MIT-developed AI assistant, to provide you with personalized support. AskTIM can review key ideas from lectures with you and provide guidance if you get stuck on a problem.

Yes, you earn digital certificates from MIT Open Learning when you successfully complete the modules and courses that are part of the Universal AI program. The certificates are modular and stackable, meaning you earn them at each learning milestone in the program—module, course, and full program.

The Universal AI program is not degree- or license-granting, and does not carry academic credit. Universal AI certificates do not imply or confer any academic standing and are not interchangeable for any undergraduate or graduate academic credit.

The first course of Universal AI, Fundamentals of Programming and Machine Learning, is available for free for learners everywhere - giving you a zero-risk starting point to build core AI literacy and skills. All other courses in the program are paid, with the ability to earn a certificate of completion from MIT Open Learning.

You do not need to purchase the full program, and each course can be taken on its own. However, the bundled program purchase is the best value, as it includes the five core courses and all industry-specific vertical courses for $899.

Throughout the courses, you'll complete short multiple-choice knowledge checks after videos or sections to confirm your understanding, plus broader multiple-choice assignments at the end of each module that cover the full range of material. Some assignments use coding notebooks, giving you hands-on practice interpreting AI outputs. However, you won't need to write any code — all code is provided, so you can focus on reading, running, and interpreting the results. There are no exams.

Most AI courses teach you to use today's tools, not set you up for long-term success. Universal AI teaches you the durable knowledge of how AI actually works. Throughout the program, you'll build conceptual depth, dive into real-world case studies, and explore industry applications in healthcare, finance, sustainability, transport, and more.

The self-paced, modular format lets you earn stackable MIT Open Learning certificates at every milestone, with AskTIM, an MIT-built AI learning assistant, available to guide your pathway and provide one-on-one support.
