Universal AI is a self-paced program that helps you move from beginner to confident, capable authority on AI – with no technical or coding background required. Developed by more than 30 MIT faculty and domain experts, you will learn the fundamentals of how AI works, then apply it to real-world challenges across industries. With a flexible, modular format and stackable credentials, you can learn at your own pace while gaining skills that remain relevant as AI evolves.

The foundational courses teach conceptual depth, comprehension, and applications of AI through real-world case studies and hands-on applications instead of mathematical concepts. The program also features optional courses that explore applications of AI across industry verticals including healthcare, sustainability, entrepreneurship, transportation, and more. The courses build on the core curriculum, but can also be taken on their own, so you can focus on the most relevant aspects of AI to your career or interests.

Throughout the program, you will:
– Build durable AI fluency through rigorous, accessible, and industry-relevant content from MIT faculty and experts
– Learn at your own pace with support from a dedicated AI assistant, AskTIM

Meet your instructors

Jinhua Zhao

Professor of Cities and Transportation

Jinhua Zhao is the Class 1941 Professor of Cities and Transportation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prof. Zhao integrates behavioral and computational thinking to decarbonize the world’s mobility system. Prof. Zhao founded the MIT Mobility Initiative, coalescing the Institute’s efforts on transportation research, education, entrepreneurship, and engagement. He hosts the MIT Mobility Forum, highlighting transportation innovation from MIT and across the globe. 

Prof. Zhao directs the JTL Urban Mobility Lab and Transit Lab, leading long-term collaborations with transportation authorities and operators worldwide and enabling cross-culture learning between cities in North America, Asia and Europe. 

Prof. Zhao leads the program “Mens, Manus and Machina (M3S): How AI Impacts the Future of Work and Future of Learning” at the Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART).
